Bank's Loan Portfolio

In 1997, the banks of the republic gave loans amount to US $10.6 bln. Loans to various sectors of economy totalled US $9.8 bln. It is a positive factor that the majority of loans - over 60% - are KZT-denominated. Over the first two months of 1998, total amount of loans reached US $1.96 bln., where loans in national currency accounted for 56.2%. Over the last year, average interest rate on KZT-denominated loans went from 39.4% in January 1997 down to 23.3% in February 1998. Interest on loans given in foreign currency decreased from 17.5% at the beginning of 1997 to 12.1% at the beginning of 1998. |

| Sectoral distribution of loan portfolio | Distribution of loans by sectors of the economy is comparatively stable. The majority of loans are given to industrial enterprises - 36% in 1997 and 38% for the first two months of 1998, then to enterprises engaged in trade - 11% and 18% respectively. Total amount of loans to industry in 1997 reached US $2.9 bln, to trade - US $874 mln. |
